This shows that even though the participants recorded their performance, and there was no audience watching them directly, they still faced barriers and a lack of confidence when presenting the storytelling.

While for the language aspects, the lowest score was for ‘communicative abilities with the audience’ (M= 1.2). The results of the study revealed that for non-language aspects, the lowest score was for ‘dress code’ (M=2.1), meaning that the students did not make any efforts to dress and use props that were related to the stories they were telling. It employed participant observation and interviews to collect data.

The participants of the study were 19 students enrolled in the Drama in ELT (English Language Teaching) course at Universitas Syiah Kuala, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The students performed retelling of narratives such as fables, legends, myths, and fairy tales using their smartphones and video recorder. Brewster, Ellis dan Girard (2002) menyatakan bahwa penggunaan storytelling dapat memotivasi siswa SD untuk belajar bahasa asing, khususnya bahasa Inggris. Penggunaan metode bercerita (storytelling) dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing telah direkomendasikan sebagai salah satu metode untuk membelajarkan vocabulary oleh para ahli di bidang English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL). Masalah yang sering dihadapi pada konteks tersebut diantaranya adalah ketersediaan guru bahasa Inggris SD yang berkualitas, yang dapat menjalankan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sesuai dengan karakteristik siswa SD.

Akan tetapi, kebijakan memasukkan pelajaran bahasa Inggris pada kurikulum SD bukan tanpa masalah. Di Indonesia, hal ini berpengaruh terhadap kebijakan diberlakukannya pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di tingkat sekolah dasar sejak tahun 1994. Bahasa Inggris telah menjadi salah satu bahasa yang memegang peranan penting pada pergaulan tingkat global, baik didalam konteks personal maupun profesional.
